Pahis

Everybody can see that this is a bad guy because he looks in multiple directions at once...

Luonnoksia Irlannista

Hemmetin hieno! Kuuntele, Suomi.
I spent a good year trying to find a sketchbook in Finland that has brownish or grey pages. There were none. Apparently there is no possibility that anyone would dare try to sketch on anything but Bright White Sketching Paper here. Finally I got frustrated and decided to make my own sketchbooks from Fabriano's Colore -series paper. It's a nice thick paper I use a lot. I took one of the books to Ireland with me but when we came back, it was still almost untouched. The reason is this book, that I found in the first art supply store I came across. Brown pages - can hold a little bit of water. Bloody marvellous! Listen up, Finland.

IF - Routine

Tämä on rutiiniharjoitusta rutiineimmillaan - croquista alastonmallista. Jouduin pitkään piirtelemään kahviloissa satunnaisia istuskelijoita, mutta löydettyäni Kuvittajat ry:n croquisryhmän, saan vihdoin tehtyä tätä perusharjoitusta säännöllisesti. Ero piirtämisessä on aika valtava.

This is routine practise at it's most routine - croquis from a nude model. For a long time I had to sketch random sitters at cafès, but after I found a good and regular croquis-group I can finally do this very basic excercise on a solid base. The impact on my drawing is huge.

Bloomsday

In Galway, there is the former house of James Joyce's wife, Barnacle, which is now a museum. We thought we'd pop by while we were there but had no idea we happened to be there on Bloomsday - named after a character in Joyce's most famous book.

Suddenly, awfully nice ladies sat us on a bench and filled our mouths with tea and biscuits. Apparently they did this every year - they sat in the house of Barnacle, drank tea, ate biscuits and read Joyce. They only asked that all visitors read a bit of Joyce out loud. After I had stumbled through my performance, I took out my sketchpad and asked if I could draw. The nice lady had to ask the manager before she dared say yes. It was a very comfortable half an hour, sitting with James Joyce and biscuits.

Irlantilaisia kukkia

Kukkamaalaus on minulle täysin vierasta maaperää, mutta sateisena päivänä Irlannissa tarjoutui tilaisuus kokeilla tätäkin harrastetta. Nämä löytyivät "maailman lyhimmän joen" varrella sijainneen kahvilan terassilta.

I've never been much of a flower painter, but on a rainy day in Ireland I got a chance to try out this foreign and peculiar pastime. These were found on the terrace of a café, situated on the bank of "the shortest river in the world".
